Chapter Seven

The sheriff left Kevin alone without even asking a single question. Okay, he must have done his homework about Kevin. Discreet guy—good in this case. Kevin knew the number by heart, which was pretty unusual. He’d gotten used to clicking an icon or a name on a phone and getting someone from work. But this was one of his special numbers and he’d been asked not to program it into any phones.

Paranoid bunch of morons.

“Yeah get me Jacoby in the Midwest division,” he told the person who’d answered. “This is concerning a—” He stopped because he was too tired to remember the various codes at the agency—and he rarely dealt with this one. A monster run amok who must be placed in special custody to prevent another Incident. Hush hush secret secret.

God he hated the SSU.

He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to bring up the little numbers in the upper right hand of the form. After a few seconds he could visualize it.

“It’s concerning a 33K in Welkton, Wisconsin? Reported by a defense lawyer I think. Original witness, Reed first name Raymond.” Although really, how many 33Ks were there in Wisconsin? Probably fewer than a dozen reports a month, he supposed. Of all those reports, maybe one a year required an actual and extreme SSU response… Violence, anger, special restraints. He’d seen it happen.

He didn’t want to think about it.

He didn’t deal with that section of the agency anymore. He coped with petty procedural complaints usually, and God knew there were plenty. Disasters went to other people—usually.

A few clicks later a gruff voice answered. “This is Jacoby. And whoever this is, I was asleep so something better be on fire.”

Bill Jacoby had been burned out by his job years ago and Kevin counted on that.

“Good morning, Bill, this is Kevin Donnelly from the Seattle office.”

“Good morning my ass. The message is this is about a Wisconsin shifty run-in. Why the hell are you calling about a Wisconsin incident? Isn’t that out of your jurisdiction? Or are you a national now?”

“I’m not ambitious enough to be DC full time.”

“Me neither.” Jacoby yawned. “So what’s going on?”

“I’m an eyewitness to the Wisconsin event. And I’m willing to take it on. Think of all the paperwork you’ll be missing if I take over.”

“You’re not trained to be an agent.”

“I got prepped on every aspect of the SSU processing, remember? You helped train me.”

“You were an indifferent student, if I remember correctly—and I usually do.”

“Disinterested and sneering, yup. That’s me. But not indifferent, because I was good at it. Remember? I can do the work. I’m an expert at forms and, after all the reports I’ve read, I should be able to mimic an agent’s style just fine.”

He had to take care of this. It was his damn fault Ray thought to call in the SSU. Kevin had spoken of his work enough to his sister and of course Nancy would pass along things he’d said to Ray.

A long silence passed.

Jacoby said, “I’m not crazy about this idea.
